• Location of the Project

You arrive at the Centro Yanachaga project  from Lima by car or coach via the Carretera Central, which runs across the Andes chains (maximum pass height 4,800 m!) to the Departamento Pasco. Fortunately, the road is now asphalted all the way through, but due to the heavy truck traffic between Lima and the mining town of Oroya you have to accounter  a lot of driving time – calculate with 10 hours driving time (the driving time indicated by Google on the left is based on European conditions)! The destination is the provincial town of Oxapampa, from where you can take a shared taxi or your own car to Huancabamba. About 7 km behind Oxapampa is the small village of Quillazú, the location of the “Girls Project”; the site is at the end of the village to the left of the road, directly behind the school. The project´s area covers 40 ha. Another 20 km along the river you get to the village Huancabamba after about 1 hour, where you turn right at the entrance to the Hazienda Yanachaga, the main location of the Centro Yanachaga project. The Hacienda Yanachaga is situated at 1800m above sea level on the edge of today’s National Park Yanachaga Chemillién, a mighty mountain range, most of which is still completely undeveloped and covered with primary forest. It forms the natural border between the Andean highlands and the Amazon lowlands and has a particularly valuable, unique ecosystem, a rich flora and fauna. The Yanachaga River, which flows through the hacienda area, rises in these mountains and joins the Chorrobamba River near the village of Huancabamba. It carries cool, clear water and gives the valley its special fertility. The the project area covers nearly 700 ha. There are the Hacienda Yanachaga, mountains, valleys, streams, forests, plantations and pastures. The Hacienda Yanachaga consists of the buildings of the old farm Yanachaga, newly built houses and infrastructure facilities. The climate is very pleasant for Europeans, not tropically humid but mild. During the day, summer temperatures shift between 20°C and 30°C, in the evening and at night, the altitude is pleasantly noticeable, because it gets quite cool, so that you can sleep well. In the months of January, February and March there is a distinct rainy season.
